Practice this shit!

My first couple real league practices have been awesome. I love being able to skate twice a week, everything is getting easier much faster.

Every scrimmage like drill starts by me having a huge “What the fuck just happened?” moment, but those start to fade and you are able to grab a moment here and moment there of great satisfaction. I’m hopeful that those moments will become more frequent!

Here’s a list of things we are doing and I should work on them often!

1 – 3 turns. This is a one foot transition. Outside edge to inside, or vice versa, any combo you want. Much easier to do when rolling.

2 – one foot hop. Use your core, maybe swing your arms, keep your knee up high.

3 – jumping from your outside edge on one foot, to the outside edge on the other foot. Another type of one foot transition.

4 – this one is amazing. Scully, then when your feet are farthest apart, jump. You are pushing off on your edges and you gain speed!

5 – skating on one foot and using your edges to turn. From what I can see, most of the girls use their hips for this one a great deal.

6 – 360 jumps. This one actually looks like it start more like a normal 360 transition with a jump at the end. Strange side note, I seem to do 360 transitions very very well on my bad side.

7 – kick ass drill, hockey stop pyramid. With a partner, you are both on the track facing each other, one facing derby direction, the other opposite. One goes to the other side of the track, hockey stops once, the partner follows. Then you do two, partner does two. Etc all the way to 10, then back down. Once you have stopped, come out of it pushing off your outside foot and crossover your inside. It gives you a big step across the track! I’m realizing how essential the hockey stop is. When going fast, it gives you the fast stopping power you need to be safe. It’s the most important thing I’m working on right now. Also, I hypothesize that the plow I do always with my right foot might not be great for my ankle.

8 – backwards crossovers. Two crosses with one side, two with the other. Pretty simple.

9 – skating in opposite derby direction. I felt like a baby camel out there.

10 – backwards skating on one foot. That shit hurts.

11 – toe stops. Always.

Suffice to say today’s focus was on edges, hopping and one foot skating. All skills that I can work on at Lloyd’s. Or I need to check in with genesis! They probably have their track open now.

22 in 5. Still.

I was totally ready for it today. I was sure I was going to make it. I felt like my technique was good, but people were passing me and I got the same fucking count that I got skating outside. So these are my thoughts: it takes time to go around the slower people. Also, I totally thought I was going to make it, so I didn’t really push very hard and concentrated on form. Not entirely a bad thing, it should come before trying to get tones of raw speed. I did do crossovers the whole way, so this is my plan for next week. Get the iPhone app that keeps track of the pace and have my counter let me know if I’m going to make it at my current pace. I’m really going to push it the first 3 minutes, just get my feet moving a little faster.

Side note, men’s derby is beautiful and brutal. Is it weird that it kind of turns me on? It appeals to the UFC fan in me, but without the boring shit.

Backwards skating

Great practice last night. Learned a lot of good shit, so pay attention.

Transitions: when spinning, try not to get one foot doing the big arch. It’s easy to trip and it’s too slow. Keep your feet closer together and stay a little more on your toes. This makes the turn sharper and then you’re ready for the two foot tomahawk.

Backwards skating: Tonka came back from rollercon with a kickass tip. Take your right foot and just kind of stroke it behind your left foot. Get used to how that feels to lift your foot. Now just add a little left foot swivel and you’re doing backwards crossovers! I was taught to work on the left foot swivel first and lift the right foot later. I’ve gotten nowhere. This is way better! After just a few tries, I can actually do backwards crossovers! She was showing this to all of us and even one if the vets totally loved how much easier it felt.

I did a knee tap, but only one. The others took a second. But I can get up consistently without using my hands, getting close. Oh, and it was suggested I get gaskets for my knees. Extra protection under your pads. And if you’re taping up your knee pads, don’t do it too tight. That shit doesn’t stretch and it hurts.

I’m constantly floored by how gender rolls don’t exist in derby. One guy I barely know accidentally grabbed my ass-no worries at all. Another totally changed clothes while we were talking and I didn’t even notice until he was wearing different clothes. We’re just people. There’s no thoughts like,”oh my god, that guy is so close to my ass, does it look big?” You’re way to busy thinking about a million other things. I’m not awesome at this sport yet, but I feel awesome for doing it. I wish I could feel this way all the time.

One foot gliding

Another night with the rocky view girls, and this time I brought the right wheels and did well! Outlasted lots of other girls in “shark tag” and even beat one other girl in the heat relay. It was their election night though, so there was more talking than derby-ing. It got really boring so the coach pulled me aside and gave me 30 minutes of training when the rest of the league was chatting. Got some great tips!

One foot glides: I always thought that when skating on my right foot I should lean to my right. But really, it’s too much weight on my baby toe. Keep the weight on your ball and big toe and you’ll have way more stability. Belly button over your toes and you’ll get way more out of your stride.

25 in 5: keep your feet moving. The temptation to glide will be strong, but just keep those cross overs going. If you can, give it lots in the first 3 minutes so you have some time to chill a little later.

Backwards crossovers: think “controlled fall.” Try some in one spot not really rolling, then get going. You will catch yourself. Try doing some crossovers either way in a really tight circle.

T-stopping: squeeze your bum cheeks together and engage core

Outdoor skating: when going over a rough patch or a bridge, keep your feet staggered. Just makes sense.

I also have combined my previous tip of holding my finger in front while transitioning with my toe stops and now I can tomahawk! Also, keep your feet staggered. Way more stability. Now just to get some speed up before transitioning.

T-Stopping, Bitches

3rd practice today. It is amazing to be able to do something that I couldn’t do the week before. This week, it’s cross overs and t-stopping. Yeah bitches, I can t-stop. Weight on front leg, commit, then just barely dust the floor with the back skate. I still can’t quite transfer my weight onto the back skate as I stop, but I’ve got the basic idea and my form is good. 2 knee falls were hard for me. But once we did the four point falls, the knees came down easy, so I guess it’s just a mental thing. Next time I’ll pretend I’m going down all the way and I should do better. Haha

Now to Lloyd’s for a couple hours of free skating for my cousins birthday. I’ve almost convinced her to join and she’s getting her money together for gear. She’ll be awesome.
